Dentistry in Jersey works differently from the UK, and a lot of what you’ll find online is about the NHS. This is how it works here.
Jersey isn’t part of the NHS (opens in a new tab), and adult dental care is private. Fees vary from practice to practice, so ask for a price list and whether the practice is taking new patients before you register.
Under the Dentistry (Jersey) Law 2015 (opens in a new tab), a dentist must be registered in Jersey through the Royal Court, which is only possible while they are on the UK General Dental Council’s register. You can check any dentist on the GDC online register (opens in a new tab), which also shows any conditions on their practice.
Hygienists, therapists, dental nurses and technicians are registered by the Jersey Care Commission (opens in a new tab).
The hospital’s dental department (opens in a new tab) treats children up to Year 6. From the end of primary school until they leave full-time education, the Jersey Dental Fitness Scheme (opens in a new tab) covers routine care, such as check-ups, x-rays and fillings, for a monthly fee paid to the dentist. It doesn’t cover orthodontics, crowns or cosmetic work.
Families with an income under £67,622 who have lived in Jersey for five years can get help with the first course of treatment that makes a child dentally fit to join.
Pension Plus (opens in a new tab) pays eligible pensioners up to £55 a year towards a check-up and up to £1,900 every four years towards treatment or dentures. People on Income Support can apply for a special payment (opens in a new tab) towards essential dental treatment.
Call your own practice first, and check its website for its emergency arrangements. Outside opening hours, after an accident or an injury to the face, go to the Emergency Department at the General Hospital. For a primary-age child in pain, the hospital dental department is on 01534 445300.
