Jersey has no MOT for private cars and no road tax, which surprises plenty of people who move here. A quick guide to how it works.
Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) tests public service vehicles, commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, mopeds, light motorcycles and minibuses, but not private cars. Testing for other vehicles is planned by 31 March 2028 (opens in a new tab), with no date set as of the last official answer. Until then, a regular service is the main check your car gets, so keep the paperwork.
Jersey doesn’t have a road tax (opens in a new tab): it was abolished at the end of 1993 and replaced by duty on fuel. Instead, Vehicle Emissions Duty (opens in a new tab) is paid once, when a vehicle is first registered on the island, based on its CO2 emissions. Zero-emission vehicles are exempt.
A car brought to the island is declared to Customs, with GST at 5% (opens in a new tab) on its value including freight and insurance. Then you pay VED, DVS inspects the car and it is registered with a Jersey number plate. The fees are on gov.je.
Under the Supply of Goods and Services (Jersey) Law 2009 (opens in a new tab), a garage must do the work with reasonable care and skill, in a reasonable time, and for a reasonable price if no price was agreed. Agree the price, or a limit, before work starts, and ask the garage to call you before going over it. The Consumer Advice Service can help on 01534 448160.
When you buy second-hand from a business, you have the same rights as buying new (opens in a new tab), except for reasonable wear and tear. Buying from a private seller gives you fewer rights.
