Taxis are licensed by Driver and Vehicle Standards. Under the Motor Traffic (Cabs – General) (Jersey) Order 2021 (opens in a new tab) there are two kinds: taxi-cabs, which can wait at ranks, and cabs that must be booked in advance and can’t use the ranks.
The main ranks are at Weighbridge Place, Library Place, Snow Hill, the ferry terminal and Jersey Airport. Every driver holds a badge that is renewed each year, after a driving test, an Island knowledge test, a medical and a criminal record check.
The Government sets the most a cab can charge, in an Order last changed on 28 July 2026 (opens in a new tab). From Monday to Saturday, 7am to 11pm, that is £4.15 for the first 176 yards and 31p for each 176 yards after. Extra passengers over four cost £2 each, and paying other than in cash adds 50p. Rank taxis must have a sealed, approved meter and a card machine.
A firm can agree a different price with you before the journey, or charge its own published rates for booked trips, so ask for the price when you book.
There’s a public taxi rank (opens in a new tab) right in front of the Arrivals terminal. If you’ve booked a cab, it waits in a separate area behind the arrivals car park.
Rank taxis must meet accessibility standards, and the Government of Jersey’s taxi pages (opens in a new tab) show which booking firms have wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Say you need one when you book.
Driver and Vehicle Standards regulates taxis. You can send feedback through the form on gov.je, or contact DVS on 01534 448600 or dvsinfo@gov.je.
