Jersey has its own rules for gas, oil and heating work, and plenty of what you read online about UK regulations doesn’t apply here. These are the checks that do.
Jersey doesn’t use the UK’s gas regulations, but the Health and Safety Inspectorate says the legal requirements for gas work are the same in Jersey (opens in a new tab): anyone working on gas appliances must be on the Gas Safe Register.
Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card and check the licence number on the Gas Safe Register website (opens in a new tab). If you smell gas, call Island Energy’s emergency line on 01534 755555.
An OFTEC-registered installer (opens in a new tab) can fit an oil boiler and notify the building department for you. If your installer isn’t registered with OFTEC or Gas Safe, you have to make a building application yourself.
The Government of Jersey also advises using an OFTEC technician (opens in a new tab) to install or decommission an oil tank, because a leaking tank can pollute water supplies.
A new boiler, heat pump or unvented hot water cylinder needs building permission under Jersey’s Building Bye-laws, unless the installer belongs to an approved competent person scheme (opens in a new tab). The scheme then notifies the department within 30 days of the work being finished. Either way, ask for the certificate at the end and keep it with your house papers.
The Government of Jersey’s Low Carbon Heating Incentive (opens in a new tab) pays up to £9,000 in match funding towards an air source heat pump that replaces an oil or gas system, or up to £15,000 for low-income households. Other low-carbon heating, such as electric flow boilers and storage heaters, can get up to £4,000. Funding is available until 2030.
You apply through a contractor approved under Jersey’s Contractor Quality Scheme, before you accept a quote, and the property needs a valid Jersey energy performance certificate. The UK’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme doesn’t apply in Jersey.
Jersey Trading Standards points out (opens in a new tab) that a quotation is a fixed price and legally binding, while an estimate is only an informed guess. Ask whether the quote is free, what the minimum call-out charge is, and get the price in writing before work starts.
Under the Supply of Goods and Services (Jersey) Law 2009 (opens in a new tab), a trader must do the work with reasonable care and skill. If something goes wrong, the free Consumer Advice Service can help on 01534 448160.
Jersey Water doesn’t run an approved plumber scheme (opens in a new tab) and can’t recommend one, so treat any “approved by Jersey Water” claim with care. For a new mains connection, its inspectors check the plumbing before the water goes on.
General information, checked against official sources on 1 October 2026. Rules change, so check the linked sources before you rely on them.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the licence number on the Gas Safe Register website. The Government of Jersey says the legal requirements for gas work are the same in Jersey as in the UK, so anyone working on gas must be registered.
Yes. The Low Carbon Heating Incentive pays up to £9,000 in match funding towards an air source heat pump that replaces an oil or gas system, or up to £15,000 for low-income households, until 2030. You apply through a contractor approved under the Contractor Quality Scheme before accepting a quote.
Yes, unless the installer is registered with an approved scheme such as Gas Safe or OFTEC, which notifies the building department for you. With an unregistered installer you have to make a building application yourself.

Jersey Trading Standards explains that a quotation is a fixed, legally binding price, while an estimate is only an informed guess. Ask for a written quotation before work starts.
No. Jersey has its own scheme, the Low Carbon Heating Incentive, run by the Government of Jersey with Jersey Electricity.
