The £60 rule in short
- Add up the price, postage, packing and insurance for everything in the delivery.
- £60 or less, bought for yourself: no GST.
- Over £60: 5% GST on the whole amount. It is a threshold, not an allowance.
- Bought for a business: 5% GST at any value.
- Seller already charged Jersey GST: nothing more to pay.
- Alcohol, tobacco, e-liquid and fuel: excise duty at any value.
- From outside the UK, Guernsey and the Isle of Man and over £135: customs duty may be added, and GST is then worked out on the total including it.
The £60 applies to goods sent by post or courier. Goods you carry back in your luggage have separate duty-free allowances.

Questions
What is the GST threshold for parcels sent to Jersey?
£60. If the total value of a parcel you buy for yourself, including postage and insurance, is £60 or less, there is no GST to pay. Over £60, GST is due on the whole value, not just the part above £60.
Does postage count towards the £60?
Yes. The value includes the price you paid (with any UK VAT), postage and freight, packing, insurance, commission and any duties charged before or on arrival.
What if I order several things at once?
Items that arrive in one delivery are added together and treated as one parcel. Splitting an order on purpose to stay under £60 does not count.
Do businesses get the £60 allowance?
No. The £60 is only for goods bought for personal use. Goods imported for a business pay GST at any value.
The shop already charged me Jersey GST. Do I pay again?
No. Large online sellers registered for Jersey GST charge it at checkout, whatever the order value. If Jersey Customs asks you to declare the parcel, you do not pay the GST a second time.
What about alcohol, tobacco and vapes?
Excise duty is due on alcohol, tobacco, e-liquid and fuel whatever their value and wherever they come from, so the £60 rule does not cover them. This calculator does not work out excise.
Is there customs duty on parcels from the EU, the US or China?
It can be due on goods from outside the customs union that Jersey shares with the UK, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, if the parcel is worth more than £135. The rate depends on the goods: check the UK Trade Tariff (opens in a new tab). Any customs duty then counts towards the value for GST.
When does a Jersey business have to register for GST?
When its taxable sales have been more than £300,000 in the last 12 months, or are expected to be in the next 12. Our GST guide for small businesses explains the rest.
