Jersey garages →How the calculator works
- VED is a one-off duty paid when a vehicle is first registered in Jersey. It is set by the CO2 figure, or by engine size where there is no published CO2 figure.
- GST is 5% of the vehicle’s value including freight and insurance. Gov.je says the value also includes excise duty charged on arrival, and VED is an excise duty, so we add VED to the value first. Jersey Customs confirms the final figure.
- DVS fees are the £37.70 registration fee plus the inspection that fits the vehicle. Personalised numbers and number plates are extra.

Reliefs
- Moving to Jersey: no VED if you lived outside Jersey for at least 12 months in a row, had and used the vehicle for at least 6 months, and agree not to sell, hire or lend it for 12 months. A private car or its trailer can also come in without GST on similar terms; vans and other commercial vehicles still pay GST.
- Older vehicles: no VED on a vehicle built more than 50 years before it is registered.
- Disability: no VED on a vehicle with up to 16 passenger seats built or substantially adapted for a disabled driver, or to carry someone in a wheelchair or on a stretcher.
- Exported or scrapped soon after: half the VED can be refunded if the vehicle leaves Jersey, or is destroyed under customs control, within 6 months.

Questions
What are the Jersey VED rates for 2026?
For a car, VED goes by its CO2 figure: nothing for 0 g/km, £37 for 1 to 50 g/km, £464 for 101 to 125 g/km, £787 for 126 to 150 g/km and up to £12,401 over 200 g/km. Vans and Euro 5 or 6 commercial vehicles pay less. The full tables are below.
When do you pay VED in Jersey?
Once, when the vehicle is first registered in Jersey. It is not a yearly road tax. It also applies to a vehicle already on the island that has never had Jersey plates.
Do electric cars pay VED in Jersey?
No. Fully electric vehicles have a CO2 figure of 0 g/km, and that band is £0.
Do I pay VED if I am moving to Jersey with my car?
Not if you meet the transfer of residence conditions: you lived outside Jersey for at least 12 months in a row, you had and used the vehicle for at least 6 months, and you agree not to sell, hire or lend it for 12 months. A private car can also come in without GST on similar conditions.
Is there customs duty on a car brought into Jersey?
Not from the UK, Guernsey or the Isle of Man, which are in the same customs union as Jersey. From anywhere else, customs duty may be due on top: the rate is in the UK Trade Tariff (opens in a new tab), and Jersey Customs will confirm it. This calculator does not add it.
Do VED rates change?
Usually every 1 January. A vehicle not registered by 31 December pays the new rate. These are the 2026 rates; we update this page when the new sheet is published.
