What is web hosting?

Web hosting is the service that keeps your website's files available on the internet. When someone visits your web address, a hosting server sends the pages, images and other files to their browser. Hosting is separate from your domain name, which is the address people type, and from the work of designing the site.

In plain English

Think of a website as a shop and hosting as the premises where the shop’s contents are kept. Your pages, photographs, styles and forms need a place that can answer a visitor’s request at any hour. A hosting company provides that place, usually on computers called servers. When someone opens your site, the server sends the relevant files to their browser. Mozilla’s guide to publishing a website explains the same distinction between hosting and a domain name.

The domain is the address on the sign. It can be registered with one company while the website is hosted by another. Your web designer may be a third party. Having all three with one supplier can be convenient, but it helps to know which agreement covers which job. If a quote says only “website”, ask whether it includes the build, hosting, the domain registration and ongoing changes.

Hosting plans also differ. One may supply server space and leave you to update the software. Another may include monitoring, backups, a security certificate and a person to contact. The word hosting alone does not promise any particular level of care. The practical comparison is what happens after launch, especially when a form stops working or a page needs changing.

Why it matters to a Jersey business

A Jersey customer might find you on Google, follow a link from a directory or type your address from a van. In each case, the site needs to load and make its contact details easy to use. A broken site can interrupt enquiries even if the domain registration is still current. A domain that expires can make a healthy hosted site unreachable, so keep track of both renewals.

Do not assume that hosting has to be physically on the island because you serve Jersey. Ask where your supplier hosts the site if that matters to your organisation, but judge the service by its reliability, support, security and the needs of your visitors. A clear site that works well on a phone often matters more to a local customer than the server’s postcode.

The Channel Islands domain registry explicitly separates registration, nameserver service, web hosting and email handling. That distinction is useful when planning a move: changing your web host need not mean giving up your .je address or moving your inboxes.

A Jersey example

Imagine a St Helier florist with a simple site showing bouquets, delivery areas and a telephone number. The business owns example.je, a registrar manages the domain, and a host keeps the site available. If the florist commissions a new design, the address can stay the same. The new site is prepared on another host, checked on a phone, and then the domain’s settings are changed so visitors reach it. This is a hypothetical example; the important point is that each part can be changed separately.

If orders@example.je also receives customer messages, the person making the change must check email settings before altering DNS. A broad “point everything at the new host” instruction could affect mail even though the job was only to replace the website.

What to do

Ask for a written list of what your hosting covers. Check backups, restoration, security certificate renewal, software maintenance, support hours, how to request a content change and what happens if you leave. Ask whether you can export your content and who controls the domain account. Keep the login and renewal details somewhere your business can reach them.

If you are moving an existing site, make a copy before the change. Test the replacement site and contact form, note the current email settings, then change only the records needed for the website. Check both the www and non-www address afterwards. Our guide to website costs in Jersey explains the other line items a quote can hide.

Common myths

“I bought a domain, so the website is hosted.” The address and the space that serves the site are separate services. Some packages bundle them, but registration by itself does not publish pages.

“A low monthly price includes someone to fix everything.” It may cover only server resources. Check the service terms rather than guessing from the price.

“Changing host means losing my .je name.” If your business controls the registration, the domain can usually remain in place while you change where it points.

Our take

Jersey Web’s view is to judge hosting by the responsibilities written into the plan. A clear answer about backups, updates, support and leaving the service is more useful than a long list of server specifications. If those answers are missing, ask before the site goes live.

Four steps from typing a domain name to DNS lookup, hosting and a page appearing in the browser.
How a website address works

You can change hosting without changing your business address.

Read the diagram in text
  1. Domain name. A customer types your website address, such as yourbusiness.je.
  2. DNS lookup. DNS records help the browser find the service for that name.
  3. Web hosting. The hosting service responds with the website's files or content.
  4. Browser. The browser uses the response to display the page to the customer.

Website backup checklist: identify important data, keep protected copies, choose a recovery point, and test restoration.
A backup needs a restore plan

Ask when the last successful restore test took place.

Read the diagram in text
  1. Identify the data. Include site files, databases and the settings needed to run them.
  2. Protect the copies. Keep recovery copies separate from the everyday working system.
  3. Choose a recovery point. Know how much recent work or order information could be missing.
  4. Test restoration. Restore safely, check forms and content, and record the result.

  1. Infrastructure. Identify who maintains the underlying hosting platform.
  2. System and application. Assign relevant updates, configuration and releases.
  3. Data and recovery. Clarify what is copied and how the service is restored.

Common questions

Is hosting the same as a domain name?
No. Hosting makes the website's files available to visitors; a domain name is the address used to reach them. You can buy the two services from different companies, provided the domain's DNS points to the right hosting service.
Can I change hosting without changing my web address?
Usually, yes. Keep the domain registration under your control, move or rebuild the site with the new host, and update the relevant DNS records. Plan the change carefully if the same domain also handles your business email.
Does hosting include website updates and backups?
It depends on the provider and plan. Ask separately about backups, restoring a backup, software updates, security, certificates and support. A price for server space alone does not tell you who will look after the website.
Do I need hosting for a one-page website?
Yes, if you want that page available online, something must serve it to visitors. A website builder may bundle hosting into its subscription, while a separately built site may use an independent host.
