Website and marketing terms beginning with U

36 plain-English definitions, from UDP to UTM tags. Terms with a link have a full explanation with a Jersey example. To search every term, go back to the Jargon Buster.

  • Websites & hosting

    UDP

UDP means User Datagram Protocol. It carries datagrams without providing delivery, ordering or duplicate-protection guarantees itself. Applications or protocols using UDP can add their own mechanisms. A Jersey business should ask which service is involved and review the actual application behaviour before judging reliability or security from the transport name.

    Also called: User Datagram Protocol

    Uint8Array

Uint8Array is a JavaScript typed array of unsigned eight-bit integer values. It can represent bytes used in an application’s encoding or binary-data process. The values alone do not identify a particular text encoding or media format. Ask the maintainer to document their intended interpretation and review the actual output of the complete exchange.

Also called: Unsigned eight-bit typed array

  • AI & new tech

    Undefined

Undefined is a JavaScript primitive value with its own type. A feature encountering it needs a defined interpretation and next action. Have the maintainer explain the relevant source and missing-value handling, then review useful feedback rather than silently expanding absent information into a default business decision or completed customer result.

    Unicode

Unicode is a standard for identifying characters across writing systems and symbols. Encodings such as UTF-8 determine how Unicode text is represented as data. A Jersey business should check names, punctuation and other required text through its actual forms, storage and exports; claiming Unicode support alone does not verify the complete text-handling journey.

  • AI & new tech

    Unicode normalisation

Unicode normalisation converts text to a defined normalised form, supporting appropriate comparison of certain related code-point sequences. Canonical and compatibility forms serve different purposes. Review the application’s intended treatment of the text; normalisation is separate from translation, correcting a spelling error or proving that two customer records belong to the same person.

    Also called: Unicode normalization

  • Websites & hosting

    Unit testing

Unit testing checks a small part of software in isolation against expected behaviour. It can help identify a problem close to the code involved, but does not establish that a complete website journey works. Ask which behaviour is covered and which connected actions need other checks.

    Also called: unit test

  • Design & content

    Unix timestamp

A Unix timestamp expresses an instant as elapsed time relative to the Unix epoch at the start of 1 January 1970 UTC. The unit must be explicit: JavaScript Date uses milliseconds, while other exchanges can use seconds. Confirm the actual unit and representation before comparing values or displaying the intended customer appointment.

    Also called: Unix epoch timestamp

  • Analytics

    Unwanted referrals

Unwanted referrals are referring domains that Google Analytics is configured not to treat as referral traffic sources. This can be useful for parts of an existing customer journey, such as returning from a payment provider. For a Jersey business, document the reason for each rule and inspect the actual journey before changing how its traffic sources are interpreted.

    Also called: GA4 referral exclusions

  • Websites & hosting

    Uptime

Uptime is the period a website or service remains available, often expressed as a percentage over a stated interval. Ask what a hosting promise measures and what it excludes. A site can be technically online while a Jersey customer still cannot complete a form or payment.

    URL

A URL is an address identifying where a resource such as a page, image or video can be found.

    Also called: web address

  • Websites & hosting

    URL fragment

A URL fragment is the part of an address after a hash sign. It often identifies a section within a page, letting a link move the reader directly there. The fragment is handled by the client and is not included in the HTTP request to the server.

    Also called: hash fragment

  • Websites & hosting

    URL hash property

The URL hash property contains a leading hash sign and the fragment identifier, or an empty string when there is no fragment. It is part of address representation. Review the actual destination section or application behaviour with the maintainer, since changing the property does not by itself establish that the intended customer information appears.

    Also called: URL.hash

  • Websites & hosting

    URL hostname

The URL hostname property represents the domain name or IP address, and is empty when the address has no hostname. It is one component rather than the whole resource address. Check the intended destination and relevant scheme with the maintainer instead of infer the page or business outcome from the hostname alone.

    Also called: URL.hostname

  • Websites & hosting

    URL object

The URL interface gives code properties and methods for parsing, constructing and modifying addresses, including resolving a relative address against a supplied base. It handles address representation rather than prove the resource exists or is appropriate. Review the actual destination and business meaning before approving a generated link.

    Also called: URL interface

  • Websites & hosting

    URL origin property

The URL origin property returns an origin representation whose structure depends on the URL type. For HTTP and HTTPS it includes the scheme and host, with a non-default port where relevant. Identify the actual scheme and access context with the maintainer rather than assume every kind of address has the same origin representation.

    Also called: URL.origin

  • Websites & hosting

    URL pathname

The URL pathname property represents the address’s path; query parameters are separate from that path. Its behaviour also depends on the URL scheme. Review the actual route and resource with the maintainer rather than assume a readable pathname proves the destination exists, contains approved information or corresponds directly to a physical server file.

    Also called: URL.pathname

  • Websites & hosting

    URL port property

The URL port property contains the represented port number as a string, or an empty string for a protocol’s default port. It is an address component rather than proof that a service is reachable or permitted. Review the actual destination configuration and observed request outcome instead of interpret an empty property as evidence that no port is used.

    Also called: URL.port

  • Websites & hosting

    URL search property

The URL search property contains the query string with its leading question mark, or an empty string when there is no query. It can be changed in the URL object. Review how the application interprets the entries and updates the actual address or view, rather than treat property assignment as the whole filter workflow.

    Also called: URL.search

  • SEO

    URL slug

A URL slug is a readable identifier commonly used for a page within a website address, such as a service name in the path.

    Also called: page slug

  • Websites & hosting

    URLSearchParams

URLSearchParams is an interface for reading and modifying query-string entries, such as the named values used by a website filter. It handles their representation, while the application defines their meaning. For a Jersey business, review supported values, repeated choices and shared links; manipulating parameters alone does not validate information, update browser history or establish the correct customer view.

  • Design & content

    Usability

Usability describes how effectively people can use a product to achieve their goals in its context. On a website, learning the controls, completing tasks and recovering from mistakes all matter. Review important customer tasks with appropriate users instead of judging ease of use from appearance alone.

  • Design & content

    Usability testing

Usability testing observes people attempting realistic tasks with a product or service so a team can identify difficulties.

    Also called: user testing

  • Design & content

    User experience

User experience, or UX, describes how someone experiences a product or service, including whether it helps them complete their task.

    Also called: UX

  • Design & content

    User interview

A user interview is a research conversation exploring a person’s relevant circumstances, experiences and needs. It can help explain the context around a website or service. A Jersey business should use neutral prompts, ask about meaningful examples and distinguish what a participant says from observed task performance or a numerical claim about the wider customer population.

    Also called: research interview

  • Analytics

    User property

A user property supplies information associated with a measured user in an analytics arrangement. Its scope differs from a detail attached to one event. Review the actual purpose, permitted values and information-handling rules before collection, and avoid treating a reporting identifier as proof of a person’s complete identity.

  • Design & content

    User research

User research investigates the circumstances, needs and behaviour of people using or likely to use a service. It helps a team make decisions from evidence, using methods suited to its questions. A Jersey business should state what it needs to learn, include relevant participants and distinguish observed findings from assumptions, opinions and proposed website changes.

  • Analytics

    User scoped custom dimension

A user-scoped custom dimension makes a collected custom user property available for relevant Google Analytics analysis. Review the underlying property, permitted values and reporting purpose together. Registering a field in the interface does not establish that the website sends the intended data, so verify the collection and resulting report separately.

Also called: GA4 user scoped dimension

    User Timing API

The User Timing API lets developers add named timestamp marks and duration measurements for chosen application tasks to the browser’s performance timeline. It makes custom timing easier to identify in performance tools. For a Jersey business, agree the start, finish and meaning of each measured task, then check its actual result before interpreting the recorded duration as an improvement.

    Also called: User Timing

  • Design & content

    UTC

UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time, a time reference used in Internet timestamp arrangements. It is separate from a particular local civil-time schedule. Identify how the actual application stores and displays the relevant instant; labelling a value UTC does not establish that a customer’s intended local appointment was converted correctly.

    Also called: Coordinated Universal Time

  • Design & content

    UTC offset

A UTC offset states the difference between a local time and UTC in an applicable representation. RFC 3339 calculates numeric offsets as local time minus UTC. Keep the offset for a particular instant distinct from the rule history of a named time zone, then verify the complete stored and displayed appointment.

    Also called: Numeric time offset

    UTF-16

UTF-16 is a Unicode encoding using sixteen-bit code units, with one or two units for a Unicode scalar value. It differs from UTF-8’s byte arrangement. Ask the maintainer to identify the actual representation and counting rules rather than assume every visible character occupies one code unit or that changing an encoding label converts existing data.

    Also called: UTF16

  • AI & new tech

    UTF-32

UTF-32 represents a Unicode scalar value using a single thirty-two-bit code unit. It is another encoding of Unicode data, separate from UTF-8 and UTF-16. A user-perceived character can still involve multiple values. Review the actual source and receiving specification rather than infer a complete text-handling arrangement from the encoding name.

    Also called: UTF32

  • AI & new tech

    UTF-8

UTF-8 is an encoding that represents Unicode text using byte sequences. A Unicode scalar value uses one to four bytes, so text length and encoded byte length are different measures. A Jersey business should verify the actual file encoding and receiving system; changing a label alone does not convert incorrectly interpreted or already damaged text.

    Also called: UTF8

  • Analytics

    UTM tags

UTM tags are campaign parameters added to a link so analytics software can describe where a visit came from.

Also called: UTM parameters, campaign tags
