Website and marketing terms beginning with T

66 plain-English definitions, from Tabindex to TypeScript. Terms with a link have a full explanation with a Jersey example. To search every term, go back to the Jargon Buster.

  • Design & content

    Tabindex

Tabindex is an HTML attribute affecting whether an element can receive focus and its participation in sequential keyboard navigation. Its values have different effects. Prefer suitable native controls and logical document order; adding tabindex does not automatically provide the keyboard behaviour or accessible meaning of a working button.

  • Design & content

    Tabs

Tabs let a person switch between associated panels within an interface. They are different from ordinary navigation links to separate pages. Review whether the content suits this pattern and check labels, selected states, keyboard behaviour and how people discover information in panels that are initially hidden.

Also called: tab interface, tab panel

  • Websites & hosting

    TAR archive

A TAR archive packages filesystem entries into a tar file for storage or transfer. Archiving and compression are separate concepts, even when a workflow combines them. Ask the maintainer to identify the package, required receiving tool and recovered contents rather than assume every file described as an archive uses the same format.

    Also called: Tar file

  • Design & content

    Target size

Target size concerns the area available to activate an interface control, such as a link or button. Size and spacing affect use with a pointer or touch. Review relevant WCAG requirements and exceptions, and check the actual clickable area rather than judge only the icon’s visible dimensions.

Also called: touch target, tap target

  • Design & content

    Task scenario

A task scenario gives a research participant a meaningful goal and relevant situation to work through. It should fit the study question without telling the person which controls to use. Review whether the task is believable and record any assistance given, because guidance changes what the observed result demonstrates.

    Also called: usability test task

  • Websites & hosting

    TCP

TCP means Transmission Control Protocol. It provides applications with a reliable, ordered stream of bytes over a network connection, using mechanisms such as acknowledgements and retransmission. Connections can still fail. A Jersey business should distinguish successful transport from a website response, a saved record and the customer’s completed task.

    Also called: Transmission Control Protocol

  • Websites & hosting

    TCP handshake

A TCP handshake is the connection-establishment exchange, commonly described through SYN, SYN-ACK and ACK messages. It is separate from a TLS handshake and an application operation. A successful connection does not confirm that a booking, payment or form submission completed; review the relevant application result as well.

  • Websites & hosting

    TCP retransmission

TCP retransmission sends relevant data again when its loss-recovery mechanisms indicate that this is needed. It supports TCP’s reliable stream service. It is different from a website repeating a whole business operation, so a retransmission observation should not be described as proof that a duplicate order was created.

  • Websites & hosting

    TCP sequence number

A TCP sequence number identifies a position in the connection’s byte sequence and participates in ordering and acknowledgement handling. It is separate from an order number or customer reference in the application. Keep network diagnostic values and business records distinct when asking the maintainer to investigate a website task.

  • Websites & hosting

    TCP slow start

TCP slow start is a congestion-control algorithm that increases the sending allowance as acknowledgements arrive under its rules. It helps probe available capacity rather than begin with an inappropriate burst. Its name does not identify every cause of a slow website; review the actual connection and application evidence.

  • Websites & hosting

    TCP window

A TCP advertised receiver window describes how much additional data the receiver is willing to accept within the sequence arrangement. It supports flow control and differs from the sender’s congestion window. It is a network value, rather than a browser window or fixed business performance score.

    Also called: TCP receive window

  • Design & content

    Telephone input

An HTML tel input supports telephone-number entry without automatically enforcing one particular telephone format. International numbering varies. Explain whose contact detail is needed and avoid interpreting the input type as verification of a working number; review relevant business entries, useful corrections and the receiving workflow.

    Also called: input type tel

  • Websites & hosting

    Test coverage

Test coverage describes how much of a defined subject is exercised by tests. Code coverage can measure executed code, but a percentage does not prove that assertions or business workflows are adequate. Review the actual behaviours and risks covered alongside any reported figure.

    Also called: code coverage

  • Websites & hosting

    Test fixture

A test fixture provides the setup, data or resources needed for a test. Its exact meaning varies with the tool and project. Use suitable sample information and a clear cleanup process so the test can run reliably without depending on unrelated previous activity.

    Also called: fixture

  • Online selling

    Test mode

Test mode is a service’s supported arrangement for exercising an integration without performing its normal live operations. The exact scope depends on the provider. Keep test and live credentials clear, use supported test data and verify the production configuration before accepting real customer payments.

  • Websites & hosting

    Test runner

A test runner executes tests and reports their results according to its configuration. It may provide filtering, setup and other features. A successful run describes the tests that actually ran; check skipped items, environment and scope before using the report as evidence for a website release.

  • Design & content

    Text spacing

Text spacing includes distances between letters, words, lines and paragraphs. People may adjust these to make content easier to read. Check that relevant spacing changes do not hide information or make controls unusable, especially in fixed-height cards, buttons and form messages.

  • Design & content

    Text track kind

Text track kind identifies how timed text is intended to be handled, with supported roles including captions, subtitles, descriptions, chapters and metadata. The role is separate from the actual words and player support. Check the selected track and resulting experience rather than assume all timed text is ordinary visible caption content.

    Also called: TextTrack kind

  • Design & content

    Text track language

Text track language identifies the language associated with a timed text track, using a language identifier such as a valid BCP 47 tag. It is metadata about the track, separate from checking its actual words. Verify the supplied text and visitor-facing selection rather than assume a configured tag proves a complete or accurate translation.

    Also called: TextTrack language

  • Design & content

    Text track mode

Text track mode controls whether a timed text track is disabled, active but hidden, or showing under the supported TextTrack interface. Hidden and disabled are different states: active hidden cues can still be processed. Review the actual track role and player presentation rather than assume every existing track is visible to visitors.

    Also called: TextTrack mode

  • Design & content

    Textarea

The HTML textarea element provides a control for editing multiple lines of plain text. It can support an enquiry description, while the business still needs a clear question, useful guidance and an agreed interpretation of the received response. Review representative short and longer entries instead of approve only the appearance of an empty box.

    Also called: text area

  • Design & content

    textContent

The browser textContent property reads text associated with a node and its descendants, or replaces its children with the supplied text when set. It differs from markup handling and rendered-text inspection. For a Jersey business, review the intended wording, update scope and remaining controls so a simple content change preserves the useful information and interaction the customer needs.

    Also called: Node.textContent

  • AI & new tech

    TextDecoder

TextDecoder is a web interface that interprets byte data under a particular text encoding and returns a JavaScript string. The selected encoding and error handling matter to the result. Inspect the source and recovered text when reviewing an exchange; obtaining a string does not by itself prove that every character was interpreted correctly.

    Also called: Text Decoder interface

  • AI & new tech

    TextDecoderStream

TextDecoderStream converts a stream of encoded byte data into strings through the supported web Encoding API. It is the streaming counterpart to TextDecoder. The actual encoding and handling of input remain relevant. Check representative results and failure behaviour rather than assume a streaming interface automatically identifies every source encoding or repairs already changed text.

    Also called: Text Decoder Stream

  • AI & new tech

    TextEncoder

TextEncoder is a web interface for encoding a JavaScript string as UTF-8 byte data. Its encode method returns a Uint8Array containing the result. It is an encoding mechanism, separate from encryption and business validation. Review the actual integration and recovered text rather than assume using the interface completes the whole exchange.

    Also called: Text Encoder interface

  • AI & new tech

    TextEncoderStream

TextEncoderStream converts a stream of strings into UTF-8 byte data through the supported web Encoding API. It is the streaming counterpart to TextEncoder. Review the complete input, processing and output arrangement; using a stream interface does not by itself provide encryption, validate business content or prove that the receiving system recovered the intended text.

    Also called: Text Encoder Stream

  • Design & content

    Theme

A theme supplies design and presentation rules for a website system such as WordPress. It can affect templates, layout and editing options. Choose it for the content and customer tasks you need, and check accessibility and mobile behaviour instead of judging only the demo’s photography.

    Also called: WordPress theme

  • Design & content

    Think aloud

Think aloud asks a participant to describe relevant thoughts while working through a task. It can help a researcher interpret an observed interaction, but it is still a research arrangement that affects the situation. Record the task and prompts, and avoid treating spoken thoughts as a complete account of every decision.

    Also called: think-aloud protocol

  • Websites & hosting

    Throughput

Network throughput is the rate of data actually transferred over a measured interval. It differs from bandwidth, which describes capacity, and latency, which describes delay. Record the test path and conditions because a measured rate for one transfer does not establish performance for every website task.

  • Websites & hosting

    Throw if aborted

The AbortSignal throwIfAborted method throws the signal’s reason if it has been aborted and otherwise does nothing. It supports checking the cancellation condition in code. Have the maintainer connect the check with the actual operation and customer outcome; calling a check is separate from undoing a receiving-system business action.

    Also called: throwIfAborted()

  • Design & content

    Time zone

A time zone provides an arrangement for relating local civil time to a time reference, including relevant offset and rule changes. It differs from a single fixed UTC offset. A Jersey business should define which zone its scheduling uses and review the stored and displayed results; an appointment time without the necessary context can be interpreted differently across systems.

    Also called: Timezone

  • Design & content

    Time-only value

A time-only value represents clock components without a date or time zone. Temporal.PlainTime documents this distinction in JavaScript’s supported Temporal arrangement. It can be relevant to recurring local schedules, while identifying a particular appointment still requires the appropriate additional context. Review the actual data model and customer-facing interpretation.

    Also called: Clock time value

  • Design & content

    Timed text cue

A timed text cue associates a unit of text with a start and end on a media timeline. WebVTT-related cue types supply the content and timing used by supported tracks. Review the cue’s actual purpose, words and playback relationship; correct timestamps alone do not prove accurate captions or meaningful visual description.

    Also called: Text track cue

  • AI & new tech

    Timeout

A timeout ends waiting after a defined period. It means the caller did not receive the expected response in time, not necessarily that the other system did nothing. An integration should check the actual outcome before repeating an action that changes money, stock or bookings.

    Also called: request timeout

  • Domains & email

    TLD

A TLD, or top-level domain, is the final part of a domain name, such as .je or .com. Different endings have different registration arrangements. A .je address can signal a connection with Jersey, but an ending alone does not guarantee ownership, trustworthiness or higher search rankings.

    Also called: top-level domain

  • Security & legal

    TLS

TLS means Transport Layer Security. It helps protect a connection between systems through encryption, integrity checks and the relevant authentication arrangement. HTTPS uses TLS for web connections. A Jersey business should maintain its supported hosting configuration and certificates, while recognising that connection protection does not secure every receiving system or prove the business itself is trustworthy.

    Also called: Transport Layer Security

  • Security & legal

    TLS handshake

A TLS handshake is the initial exchange that establishes relevant security parameters for a TLS connection. The protocol version and configuration determine the details. It is part of connection protection, rather than a customer-account login or an assessment of the business’s trustworthiness. Review supported server configuration and actual connection results.

  • Design & content

    Tone of voice

Tone of voice describes how a business’s wording sounds in a particular situation. A consistent underlying voice can adapt its tone for an explanation, error or announcement. Give writers practical examples and keep important messages clear rather than forcing every page into the same promotional mood.

    Also called: brand voice

  • Design & content

    Tooltip

A tooltip provides a short description associated with an interface element, commonly revealed on hover or focus. Essential instructions should remain available to people using different input methods. Review keyboard behaviour and accessibility before relying on a hidden hint to explain an important website action.

  • Websites & hosting

    Traceroute

Traceroute is a diagnostic approach for examining responding hops along a network path to a destination. The Windows tool is called tracert. Some devices do not return the expected diagnostic responses, so a missing hop reply does not by itself establish that application traffic failed or identify the whole cause of a website problem.

    Also called: tracert

  • Online selling

    Tracking number

A tracking number identifies a shipment in the relevant carrier’s tracking system. A shop can include it in shipping information so the customer can review updates. Check the correct carrier and parcel association; creating a number or marking an order fulfilled is separate from confirming delivery.

  • Analytics

    Tracking pixel

A tracking pixel is commonly a small requested image or related code used to observe an interaction, such as loading a page or message. The request can send information to another service. Review its actual purpose, data sharing and applicable privacy requirements before adding it to a Jersey website.

    Also called: web beacon

  • AI & new tech

    Training data

Training data is information used in the process that teaches or adapts a machine-learning model. Its quality and relevance affect that process. It differs from reference content retrieved for a particular answer. Ask a supplier which data use is involved, who controls it and how the proposed system will be evaluated.

    Also called: AI training data

  • Websites & hosting

    Transaction isolation

Transaction isolation defines how concurrent database transactions interact and which changes they can observe. Different isolation levels permit or prevent different effects. Review the actual database and configured level for the business operation; calling a workflow transactional does not automatically settle what two simultaneous booking attempts will see.

    Also called: Database isolation level

  • Websites & hosting

    Transfer size

Transfer size reports the fetched resource’s response headers and payload size in the browser PerformanceResourceTiming interface. A zero value can reflect a local-cache result or cross-origin timing restrictions. Read the surrounding evidence before interpreting it; this field is separate from a file’s source size and from the payload size after content decoding.

    Also called: transferSize

  • Websites & hosting

    Transfer-Encoding header

Transfer-Encoding describes an HTTP/1.1 message transfer coding, commonly chunked. It applies between neighbouring nodes rather than declaring the original media type. HTTP/2 uses different framing and does not permit this header. Review the protocol and actual message handling before copying a setting from an old server example.

    Also called: Transfer-Encoding

  • Online selling

    Transit time

Transit time concerns the period from carrier collection of a shipment to arrival at the customer’s address. It is separate from the shop’s preparation time. Check the actual carrier service and the platform’s supported origin and configuration; a label such as express should not be treated as a complete delivery estimate by itself.

  • Design & content

    Transition delay

Transition delay specifies the timing before a property’s transition starts when its value changes. Review it separately from the time taken by the change itself. Keep the purpose clear and inspect the actual interface response, so a customer is not left uncertain whether their selection or other action was recognised.

    Also called: transition-delay

  • Design & content

    Transition duration

Transition duration sets how long a CSS transition takes to complete; the default zero duration produces no animated change. It is separate from delay and easing. Record the intended timing with the feature brief, then inspect whether the customer receives clear feedback and can continue through the supported interaction.

    Also called: transition-duration

  • Design & content

    Transition property

The CSS transition-property setting identifies the style properties that receive a transition effect. Review the actual visual change the feature needs and keep its scope explicit. A precise property choice helps explain the presentation, while the underlying control action and useful final state still need verification through the customer task.

    Also called: transition-property

  • Design & content

    Transition timing function

The transition timing function sets how intermediate style values are calculated during a CSS transition. It describes progress within the effect, rather than its total duration. Compare the actual response in the interface and record the chosen timing arrangement, with a useful final state and appropriate reduced-motion behaviour.

    Also called: transition-timing-function

  • Websites & hosting

    Transitive dependency

A transitive dependency is included through another dependency rather than being the project’s directly declared requirement. Dependency chains can contain several layers. Review the actual installed relationship and relevant updates when maintaining a website, because an indirect component can still affect its build or runtime.

  • AI & new tech

    Transpilation

Transpilation transforms source code into another form of source code, often to support a target language version or environment. It is part of the project’s build arrangement. Check the actual browser or runtime targets and test the delivered result; transformation alone does not establish complete compatibility.

    Also called: transpiler

  • Websites & hosting

    Transport layer

The transport layer is the networking role concerned with communication between endpoint applications, illustrated by protocols such as TCP and UDP. Their services differ. A conceptual layer description helps organise a support discussion, but it does not replace examining the actual protocol, configuration and customer task.

  • Websites & hosting

    Tree shaking

Tree shaking removes code that a build can determine is unused, reducing some application bundles. Results depend on the code and build tools. It does not eliminate every unnecessary dependency, so review what the page actually loads and uses alongside automated optimisation.

    Also called: unused code removal

  • Design & content

    Tree testing

Tree testing evaluates how people find items within a proposed or existing category hierarchy. It isolates the structure from much of the full visual interface. Use meaningful tasks and clear interpretation, and review the working website separately because layout and other cues also affect navigation.

    Also called: tree test

  • AI & new tech

    Truthy

A truthy JavaScript value is treated as true in a Boolean context. That does not require it to be the Boolean value true; non-empty text can qualify. Review the actual representation and condition used by the feature, so an integration label is not silently interpreted as a different logical business state.

  • Domains & email

    TTL

TTL means time to live. In DNS it describes how long an answer may be cached before it is checked again. This can affect how quickly a record change is seen. It is not a promise that every device will update at the same instant.

    Also called: time to live

  • Security & legal

    Two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication checks two different types of evidence when someone signs in, such as a password and a supported device-based confirmation.

Also called: 2FA, MFA, two-step verification

  • Domains & email

    TXT record

A TXT record stores text in DNS, often for domain verification or email authentication. A service may ask you to add a precise value to prove control of a name. Preserve existing entries that still serve a purpose, and do not publish confidential credentials as verification text.

  • Websites & hosting

    Type checking

Type checking reviews whether values and operations follow a programming language’s type rules. Tools such as TypeScript can perform static checks before execution. This can identify certain mistakes, but actual incoming data and business behaviour still need suitable validation and tests.

    Also called: static type checking

  • AI & new tech

    Type coercion

Type coercion is implicit or automatic conversion from one data type to another. JavaScript operations can apply such rules even when a separate conversion function is absent. Have the maintainer explain the actual types and operation, then inspect representative output so automatic interpretation preserves the field’s intended business meaning.

  • AI & new tech

    Type conversion

Type conversion changes a value from one data type to another, explicitly or through an implicit language rule. JavaScript can interpret values differently during arithmetic, comparison and conditions. For a Jersey website, define the source and receiving representations, review the actual conversion and relevant failures, then verify the business result rather than assuming similar-looking values have identical meanings.

    Also called: typecasting

  • AI & new tech

    Typed array

A typed array is an array-like view of binary data using a defined element type, such as unsigned eight-bit values. JavaScript supplies specific typed-array constructors rather than an ordinary exposed TypedArray constructor. Review the chosen view and its purpose; interpreting bytes through a type does not establish that the source follows the intended file or protocol.

    Also called: JavaScript typed array

  • AI & new tech

    Typeof operator

JavaScript typeof returns a string indicating the type of a value. Its supported results need careful interpretation; for example, null reports object. Have the maintainer assess the actual type check and expected input shape, then review receiving rules instead of treating a type label as complete validation of business information.

    Also called: typeof

  • AI & new tech

    TypeScript

TypeScript extends JavaScript with a type system used during development to help check code. The website’s runtime still needs appropriate handling of actual inputs and errors. Ask how type checking fits the build and review process rather than assuming it prevents every faulty behaviour.

    Also called: TS
