Website and marketing terms beginning with L

37 plain-English definitions, from LAN to Lossy compression. Terms with a link have a full explanation with a Jersey example. To search every term, go back to the Jargon Buster.

  • Websites & hosting

    LAN

LAN means local area network. It connects devices within a limited area, such as an office, using the relevant wired or wireless arrangement. It is distinct from the wider Internet connection. Review the local network and the external service separately when a staff device cannot reach a website.

    Also called: Local area network

  • Marketing & social

    Landing page

A landing page is the page someone reaches after clicking an advert, email link, search result or other campaign link.

    Also called: campaign page

  • Design & content

    Landmark region

A landmark region identifies an important part of a page, such as its main content or navigation, for assistive technology. Suitable HTML elements can supply these semantics. Keep the structure useful and identify multiple relevant regions clearly rather than adding landmarks to every small visual block.

    Also called: ARIA landmark

  • Design & content

    Language tag

A language tag identifies the language of content through a defined arrangement of subtags. Additional script or region information can be included where it usefully distinguishes the content. Use appropriate identification in the maintained page; a language tag is separate from proof that its wording was translated correctly or that it targets a particular geographic market.

    Also called: Content language tag

  • Websites & hosting

    Latency

Network latency is the delay for data to travel between specified points. It is commonly measured in milliseconds, while a round-trip measurement includes travel out and back. Latency differs from connection capacity and complete application response time. A Jersey business should record the path, method and task before interpreting a delay figure as a website diagnosis.

    Also called: network delay

  • Design & content

    Latitude

Latitude is a geographic position coordinate. The browser GeolocationCoordinates interface reports its latitude value in decimal degrees. Keep the field and coordinate convention clear when passing it to another map or service; a plausible number alone does not verify the intended premises or establish the reported location’s accuracy.

    Also called: Geographic latitude

  • Websites & hosting

    Lazy loading

Lazy loading delays fetching some resources until they are needed, such as images farther down a page. It can reduce initial transfer, but important first-view content should not be delayed unnecessarily. Set image dimensions and check the real page before assuming the setting helps.

    Also called: deferred loading

  • Marketing & social

    Lead

A lead is a person or organisation that has shown a relevant potential interest in a business’s offer. A form submission may be a lead, but it is not necessarily a qualified enquiry or sale. Judge relevance and follow-up outcomes rather than celebrating every captured address.

    Also called: sales lead

  • Marketing & social

    Lead magnet

A lead magnet is a useful resource offered to encourage a potential customer to make contact or subscribe, such as a checklist. Be clear about any email sign-up and the resource’s purpose. The download should help the reader, and access should not rely on a misleading promise.

    Also called: free download

  • Security & legal

    Least privilege

Least privilege means giving an account only the access needed for its task. It reduces unnecessary reach if an account is misused. Review staff, supplier and integration permissions as their responsibilities change, rather than assigning administrator access simply because it makes setup convenient.

  • Websites & hosting

    Linting

Linting analyses code against configured rules to identify potential problems or consistency issues. The rules and included files determine what is checked. Ask how findings are handled in the release process and distinguish a clean lint result from evidence that the application’s actual customer tasks work.

    Also called: linter

  • Design & content

    Listener once

The once option makes an event listener run at most once after registration, then removes it when invoked. Review whether this fits the feature’s task. A customer who needs to change a selection or retry an action should receive the agreed supported behaviour, so a one-time listener needs a clearly explained role.

    Also called: once event listener

  • Design & content

    Live region

A live region identifies changing page content that assistive technology may announce without moving focus to it. It can help communicate status updates. Choose appropriate announcement behaviour and test the actual journey, because announcing every change or using urgent alerts unnecessarily can disrupt the person’s task.

    Also called: ARIA live region

  • Websites & hosting

    Load balancing

Load balancing distributes work or traffic across processing resources according to the system’s rules. For a website, requests may be directed to different servers or endpoints. A Jersey business should understand the actual routing, health checks and failure handling, including which parts of the service still depend on shared systems.

    Also called: load balancer

  • Google & local

    Local citations

Local citations are online mentions of a business’s identifying details, such as its name, address and phone number.

    Also called: citations

  • Online selling

    Local delivery

Local delivery is a delivery arrangement offered within a defined service area. Eligibility may depend on addresses, postcodes or distance rules, according to the system. Check the real coverage, available capacity and customer instructions so the checkout does not promise a delivery arrangement the business cannot fulfil.

  • Google & local

    Local pack

The local pack is a group of local-business results that can appear with a map in Google Search. Google describes relevance, distance and prominence as main factors in local ranking. A complete profile helps communicate your business, but no supplier can honestly promise a permanent place in it.

    Also called: map pack

  • Google & local

    Local search distance

Local search distance concerns how far a business is from the searching customer, using Google’s known location information when needed. It is one of the main local-ranking factors. Keep location context explicit when reviewing search observations, rather than treat a result seen in one place as a fixed position for all customers.

    Also called: Google local distance

  • Google & local

    Local search prominence

Local search prominence concerns how well-known a business is and is a main local-ranking factor. Google describes information such as links and reviews as relevant to it. Keep profile accuracy and genuine review practices useful, and avoid translating a prominence discussion into a promised position or a fabricated claim about measured local demand.

    Also called: Google local prominence

  • Google & local

    Local search relevance

Local search relevance is how well a Business Profile matches the customer’s search. Google identifies it as a main local-ranking factor alongside distance and prominence. Provide accurate, useful business information and keep any visibility conclusion tied to actual observations; a relevant description does not establish a guaranteed position for every query.

    Also called: Google local relevance

  • SEO

    Local SEO

Local SEO is work that helps a business appear for searches connected to a place or a nearby need.

Also called: local search optimisation, local search SEO

  • Design & content

    Locale

A locale identifies language and related regional presentation preferences used by supported software operations. It can influence number, date and text-comparison behaviour. It is separate from a market, currency or time-zone decision. A Jersey business should record the requested and supported settings, then compare representative output rather than assume one locale label determines every aspect of the customer experience.

    Also called: Locale identifier

  • Design & content

    Locale calendar

A locale calendar setting identifies a calendar type within a supported locale or date-formatting arrangement. JavaScript Intl.Locale can expose an explicitly supplied calendar value. Keep the selected calendar separate from the business meaning of a date, and review representative output; a property being absent does not prove that the formatting operation has no default calendar.

    Also called: Locale calendar type

  • Design & content

    Locale negotiation

Locale negotiation selects a supported locale for an operation from requested preferences under the software’s matching arrangement. JavaScript Intl uses supported locales and relevant options in this process. Review the actual chosen setting and output rather than assume every requested identifier is available unchanged or that a fallback provides an approved complete content adaptation.

    Also called: Locale matching

  • Design & content

    Localisation

Localisation adapts a product or content for a particular audience’s language, regional and cultural requirements. It can involve wording, formats, layout and other audience-specific decisions. A Jersey business should review the actual adapted pages, forms and messages with appropriate content reviewers; translation alone does not establish that the complete customer experience communicates the intended offer and details.

    Also called: Localization, l10n

  • Websites & hosting

    localStorage

localStorage is browser storage associated with an origin and intended to persist beyond the current tab session. Availability and retention can still be affected by browser settings or clearing. Do not use it as the sole dependable record of a business transaction or as protection for confidential information.

    Also called: local storage

  • Websites & hosting

    Lockfile

A lockfile records resolved package information so a supported installation process can reproduce the intended dependency arrangement. It works alongside a project’s declared requirements. A Jersey business should keep the appropriate lockfile with its source, document the package manager and review changes together with the resulting build and affected website behaviour.

    Also called: package-lock.json

  • Websites & hosting

    Logging

Logging records selected system events and diagnostic details for purposes such as troubleshooting or investigating security activity. It is useful when records are accurate, accessible to authorised people and appropriate to retain. A Jersey business should agree what is recorded and who reviews it, while keeping passwords, tokens and unnecessary customer information out.

    Also called: application log

    Logical AND

JavaScript logical AND combines Boolean conditions, while more generally returning the first falsy operand or the last operand when all are truthy. It need not return a Boolean for arbitrary inputs. Have the maintainer explain the actual representation and inspect the resulting decision before relying on it as an approved business state.

  • AI & new tech

    Logical NOT

JavaScript logical NOT reverses a Boolean interpretation and returns a Boolean result. Non-Boolean values are interpreted under the language’s conditional rules. Ask which state the feature intends to negate and inspect representative input types, so the resulting true or false value corresponds to the business condition actually required.

  • AI & new tech

    Logical OR

JavaScript logical OR combines conditions and returns one of its operand values, which can be non-Boolean. Keep the actual result type and fallback purpose clear. Review representative present and absent information with the maintainer, so a conditional expression does not silently change the business meaning of a supplied value.

  • SEO

    Long-tail keyword

A long-tail keyword is a relatively specific search phrase, often with lower individual search demand than a broad term. It may reveal a clearer need, such as a service and parish. Specificity can help match useful content, but it does not automatically mean easy rankings or guaranteed enquiries.

    Also called: long tail search

  • Websites & hosting

    Long-term support

Long-term support names a defined maintenance phase or release arrangement offered by a software project. The supported period and updates depend on that project. Check the actual version’s status and plan upgrades with the maintainer rather than assuming the label means indefinite support.

    Also called: LTS

  • Design & content

    Longitude

Longitude is a geographic position coordinate. The browser GeolocationCoordinates interface reports its longitude value in decimal degrees under the documented geographic reference. Identify the actual field and receiver convention during an exchange; swapping coordinate interpretation can produce a wrong map location even when the values remain valid numbers.

    Also called: Geographic longitude

  • AI & new tech

    Loose equality

JavaScript equality using two equals signs can convert differently typed operands before comparison. It returns a Boolean result under those rules. Have the maintainer assess the actual values and intended business comparison, then inspect representative matches and failures rather than assume that similar-looking text and numeric values are compared without conversion.

    Also called: ==

  • Design & content

    Lossless compression

Lossless compression reduces storage while preserving the information represented by the original data. It can suit artwork where exact detail matters, but may produce larger files than a lossy alternative. Compare suitable exports rather than choosing a format from its label alone.

    Also called: lossless image

  • Design & content

    Lossy compression

Lossy compression reduces file size by discarding some information. Repeated or aggressive compression can damage image detail, especially lettering and sharp edges. Choose the format and quality for the artwork’s purpose, then review the result at the size visitors will actually see.

    Also called: lossy image
