Website and marketing terms beginning with R

77 plain-English definitions, from Range request to Runtime. Terms with a link have a full explanation with a Jersey example. To search every term, go back to the Jargon Buster.

  • Websites & hosting

    Range request

A range request asks an HTTP server for part of a representation, often a byte range. A supported response can use 206 Partial Content; an unsupported server may return the whole representation instead. Review the actual service behaviour when testing media seeking or download recovery rather than assume support.

    Also called: HTTP range request

  • Design & content

    Raster image

A raster image represents artwork using pixels. Photographs are common examples. Increasing its display size does not create missing detail. Prepare an appropriate resolution and inspect the delivered file so a Jersey website avoids both blurry artwork and unnecessarily large downloads.

    Also called: bitmap image

  • AI & new tech

    Rate limiting

Rate limiting restricts requests according to a service’s defined rules, such as the number allowed within a period. An integration may need to wait when it exceeds a limit. A Jersey business should plan appropriate retries, avoid duplicate operations and make delayed or failed work visible to the person responsible for the connection.

    Also called: API rate limit

  • SEO

    RDFa

RDFa uses markup attributes to express structured data within a document. It is a representation method rather than a guarantee of a search feature. Ask which vocabulary and recipient the project uses, then verify that the information matches the visible page.

  • Marketing & social

    Reach

Reach is an estimate of the distinct people or accounts exposed to content during a stated period, under the platform’s measurement rules. It differs from total impressions, which may include repeat exposure. Treat it as an audience measure rather than evidence that everyone read or remembered the message.

  • AI & new tech

    React

React is a library for building user interfaces from components. It can be used within a wider application arrangement that supplies other features. Ask how it serves the actual customer task and how the complete website is delivered, tested and maintained; the library name alone does not establish those outcomes.

  • Websites & hosting

    Read replica

A read replica is a copy of database data used to serve supported read operations in a replication arrangement. Copies may have a delay, depending on the setup. Ask which reads require current information, how replication is monitored and how recovery differs from a separately retained backup.

  • Design & content

    Read-only field

The HTML readonly attribute prevents the visitor from editing a supported control. It describes field behaviour rather than establish that its displayed information is correct or protected at the receiving system. Review why a detail is fixed, how it remains understandable and which checks the complete workflow still needs.

    Also called: readonly attribute

  • Websites & hosting

    README

A README introduces a software project and commonly explains its purpose, setup and use. Its contents depend on the project. A website handover should keep the relevant build, configuration and support instructions current, and verify that another authorised maintainer can follow them without relying on undocumented knowledge.

    Also called: README file

  • Websites & hosting

    Recovery point objective

A recovery point objective defines how much recent data loss a business can tolerate, expressed as a period of time. It guides backup and recovery design. It is a planning requirement, not proof that a particular backup service always achieves the stated result.

    Also called: RPO

  • Websites & hosting

    Recovery time objective

A recovery time objective defines the target maximum interruption a business can tolerate for a specified process. Recovery planning should identify dependencies and responsibilities needed to meet it. A target written in a document is different from a tested recovery capability or a contractual guarantee.

    Also called: RTO

  • SEO

    Redirect chain

A redirect chain sends a request through several successive redirects before reaching a final destination. It can complicate navigation and crawling. Review the actual path, final response and maintained internal links; avoid assuming that every old URL still provides a useful route simply because the first redirect exists.

  • Design & content

    Reduced motion

Reduced motion is a user preference that a website can use to adjust animation and movement. The CSS prefers-reduced-motion feature exposes that preference. Review which motion is unnecessary and retain clear feedback about the task; simply changing one animation does not establish that every moving component respects the preference.

    Also called: prefers-reduced-motion

  • Websites & hosting

    Redundancy

Redundancy provides additional components or capacity intended to support service continuity if part of an arrangement fails. Shared dependencies and the application design still matter. Review what can fail independently, how traffic changes and what data is available, rather than assume two copies eliminate every interruption or replace a backup.

  • Security & legal

    Referrer Policy

Referrer Policy controls how much relevant referring-page information is included with browser requests. Different settings change what destinations can receive. Review the actual navigation and resource requests and avoid placing sensitive values in URLs; the policy does not erase all other information a website or service may collect.

    Also called: Referrer-Policy

  • Design & content

    Reflow

Reflow describes content adapting to a changed viewport or magnification so people can read and operate it without unnecessary scrolling in two directions. Some content has genuine two-dimensional requirements. Review relevant pages and tasks at smaller available widths, checking that controls, messages and essential information remain available.

  • Security & legal

    Refresh token

A refresh token lets a client request new access tokens from an authorisation server when the supported flow provides one. It is not sent to the ordinary resource endpoint. The integration owner should follow current provider guidance for protecting, renewing and revoking this credential.

  • Online selling

    Refund

A refund returns money from a payment to the customer through the supported payment process. It is different from cancelling an unpaid order or changing a stock record. Check the provider status, customer communication and internal order records so staff understand what has actually happened.

  • AI & new tech

    RegExp exec

RegExp.exec() searches text with an expression and returns a match result array or null. It supplies a different result from a boolean test. Review the expected matching information and relevant absent case, so the next operation uses the intended portion and does not treat any returned array as a complete or approved business record.

    Also called: RegExp.exec()

  • AI & new tech

    RegExp test

RegExp.test() checks for a pattern match in text and returns a boolean. Global or sticky expressions can retain matching state between operations. Have the maintainer explain the actual expression and repeated-check behaviour, then inspect representative results instead of assuming a successful match proves the whole value satisfies the business requirement.

    Also called: RegExp.test()

  • Websites & hosting

    Regression testing

Regression testing checks that previously working behaviour still works after a change. It can include different types of tests. Choose checks based on the affected features and concrete risks, and record their coverage rather than treating a passing result as proof that every website task works.

    Also called: regression test

  • AI & new tech

    Regular expression

A regular expression is a pattern used to match text. JavaScript provides RegExp and related methods for checking or processing matches, with behaviour affected by the pattern and its flags. For a Jersey website, define what the rule should accept, review representative matches and failures, and keep pattern matching separate from wider validation, authorisation or safe content handling.

    Also called: regex, RegExp

  • AI & new tech

    Relational database

A relational database organises information in tables of rows and columns, with relationships represented through its data design. A website might connect bookings to customers through identifiers. Ask how records relate, how changes are validated and how the complete service is recovered.

  • Websites & hosting

    Relative file path

A relative file path is interpreted against an applicable starting location, such as a current directory. Its text alone can be insufficient to identify the same resource in another process. Record the base and environment, then inspect the actual resolved target before transferring or changing important website material.

    Also called: Relative path

  • Websites & hosting

    Release tag

A release tag names a particular point in repository history, often to identify a software version. It can help connect a release with its source. The tag is separate from deployment status; verify which artifact and configuration actually reached the live service.

    Also called: Git tag

  • Design & content

    Remove attribute

Element.removeAttribute() removes a named attribute from an element. Review the actual behaviour that depends on that attribute and the reason for removing it. A markup change needs a customer-task check where it affects content or controls, so the business knows the resulting state remains useful and accurately described.

    Also called: Element.removeAttribute()

  • Design & content

    Remove event listener

EventTarget.removeEventListener() removes a matching registered listener, using the event type, handler and capture setting for the relevant match. Review the feature’s lifecycle and which interactions remain needed. Removing a listener is an implementation change, so inspect the resulting customer behaviour instead of assuming that every later action should stop responding.

    Also called: EventTarget.removeEventListener()

  • Design & content

    Rendered image width

Rendered image width describes how wide an image appears in the page layout, measured in CSS pixels. It can differ from the dimensions of the downloaded file. Review the width at relevant screen sizes alongside the selected source; a small display box does not prove that the browser downloaded a small asset.

    Also called: Displayed image width

  • Design & content

    Replace children

Element.replaceChildren() replaces existing children with a specified set of nodes or strings. Review exactly which content and controls the update replaces. The business should approve the resulting structure and interaction, especially where a refreshed area needs to preserve useful feedback, selected information or a supported next action.

    Also called: Element.replaceChildren()

  • AI & new tech

    Replacement character

The Unicode replacement character, U+FFFD, can appear when a text decoder uses replacement handling for invalid data. A fatal decoding arrangement can instead reject such data. Preserve the original source and investigate the decoding step; a visible replacement marker does not identify which original character was intended or guarantee that changing a label will recover it.

    Also called: U+FFFD

  • Domains & email

    Reply-To

Reply-To is a message header field indicating the address or addresses suggested for replies. It can differ from the displayed From address. Review the actual reply destination in a website enquiry workflow so staff respond to the intended person without confusing that choice with the authorised sending identity.

    Also called: reply-to address

  • Design & content

    Report validity

The reportValidity method checks a supported input’s constraints and can display the browser’s validation problem when the relevant invalid event is not cancelled. Review the actual message and correction route. Reporting an entry problem is separate from receiving-system checks or confirmation that a completed enquiry reached the business.

    Also called: reportValidity()

  • Websites & hosting

    Repository

A repository holds a project’s recorded files and version history in a version control system. It can help organise code ownership and handover. A repository being available does not mean the live site can be restored without its deployment settings, secrets and other required services.

    Also called: repo

  • Websites & hosting

    Request animation frame

RequestAnimationFrame asks the browser to run a callback before a repaint, helping code coordinate visual updates with rendering. A request is one-shot, so continuing an animation requires further requests. For a Jersey business, review timing, motion preferences and useful feedback; choosing this method alone does not guarantee smooth movement or establish that a business operation finished.

    Also called: requestAnimationFrame()

  • AI & new tech

    Request body

A request body carries data associated with a request, where the method and service support it. For example, an API may receive submitted information in a structured body. Review the documented format, validation and permissions; placing data in a body does not by itself encrypt it or prove the operation succeeded.

  • AI & new tech

    Request header

A request header carries metadata in an HTTP request, such as supported content formats or relevant authentication information. It is distinct from the request body. Follow the service’s supported headers and handling rules, and keep confidential credentials protected rather than copying raw request details into public examples or routine project notes.

  • Websites & hosting

    Request target

An HTTP request target identifies the resource addressed by the request. In a typical HTTP/1.1 example it includes a path and can include a query string. It is separate from the requested method. Ask the developer to check the endpoint and relevant parameters when investigating a form or integration.

    Also called: HTTP request target

  • Design & content

    Required field

A required field asks the visitor for information the form needs before it can proceed. The HTML required attribute provides a browser constraint on supported controls, while receiving rules still need their own checks. For a Jersey website, justify each mandatory entry, identify it clearly and review useful missing-value feedback before accepting the complete customer task.

    Also called: required attribute

  • Design & content

    Research finding

A research finding summarises what a team has learned from relevant evidence and analysis. It is separate from a raw observation and from a proposed action afterwards. A Jersey business should retain the supporting context, describe the people and tasks studied, and connect the finding to a specific decision without overstating what the evidence proves.

    Also called: research insight

  • Design & content

    Research plan

A research plan records the purpose, questions, participants, methods and practical arrangements for a study. It helps the team connect activities to decisions. Review the plan’s scope, accessibility and handling of research material, and update it as the team learns rather than treating the original document as a fixed guarantee.

  • Design & content

    Research question

A research question states what the team needs to learn to inform a decision. It is separate from the wording asked directly to participants. Make the uncertainty explicit, choose a suitable method and revisit the question as evidence develops, rather than designing a study simply to confirm a preferred answer.

    Also called: user research question

  • Websites & hosting

    Resize Observer

Resize Observer reports changes to relevant element dimensions, allowing code to respond to component size changes that may happen without a window resize. The observed box and response need deliberate configuration. For a Jersey business, review actual content and resulting layout, including repeated changes; receiving a size report does not by itself establish a readable, stable or accessible feature.

  • Websites & hosting

    Resize observer disconnect

The Resize Observer disconnect method unobserves all of that observer’s targets. It is separate from ending observation of just one target. Have the maintainer explain the feature’s stopping condition and review relevant repeated use, so lifecycle handling remains clear when components are added, changed or removed.

    Also called: ResizeObserver.disconnect()

  • Websites & hosting

    Resize observer observe

The Resize Observer observe method starts watching a target with the selected supported box option, such as content-box or border-box. The choice affects what size changes the feature uses. Have the maintainer explain the actual option and inspect the resulting layout rather than interpret any dimension report as the whole component’s outer size.

    Also called: ResizeObserver.observe()

  • Websites & hosting

    Resize observer unobserve

The Resize Observer unobserve method ends observation of a specified element or SVG element. It concerns the target’s observation lifecycle. Review how the implementation handles replaced or no-longer-needed components and distinguish stopping size reports from reversing changes that an earlier callback made to the layout.

    Also called: ResizeObserver.unobserve()

  • Websites & hosting

    Resource decoded body size

Resource decodedBodySize describes the body size after removal of applied content encodings, including for HTTP or cache retrieval. Cross-origin restrictions can yield zero. Compare it with the appropriate encoded field only when their actual context is understood; it is a resource-size observation rather than proof that the resulting page was usable or correct.

    Also called: decodedBodySize

  • Websites & hosting

    Resource encoded body size

Resource encodedBodySize describes the payload body size before removal of applied content encodings, including for HTTP or cache retrieval. Cross-origin restrictions can yield zero. Keep the resource and field meaning with the report, distinguishing this body size from transfer size and from the decoded body when investigating delivery or compression.

    Also called: encodedBodySize

  • Websites & hosting

    Resource Timing API

The Resource Timing API exposes browser records describing the loading of website resources, such as images and scripts. Its entries can contain timing and size information, with restrictions affecting some cross-origin data. For a Jersey business, use those records to investigate a resource and loading condition, then check the actual page behaviour before drawing conclusions about the whole customer experience.

    Also called: Resource Timing

  • Websites & hosting

    Resource timing entry

A PerformanceResourceTiming entry describes timing and related information for loading an individual application resource, such as an image or script. Fields can cover network stages and resource sizes, with restrictions affecting some data. Keep the resource and conditions identifiable and review the full customer task separately before interpreting one entry as complete page performance.

    Also called: PerformanceResourceTiming

  • Websites & hosting

    Resource transfer size

Resource transferSize describes the fetched resource’s size including response headers and payload body. A zero can reflect local cache use or cross-origin restrictions when timing access is not allowed. Review the relevant fields and origin context before interpreting that zero as proof that the cache supplied the resource or that nothing was transferred.

    Also called: transferSize

  • AI & new tech

    Response body

A response body carries data associated with a server’s response, where that response includes content. An API might return a record, a result or error information. Interpret it alongside the status and service documentation rather than assume that receiving structured data establishes the full business outcome.

  • Websites & hosting

    Response body used

The Response bodyUsed property indicates whether its body has been read. It helps the implementation track body consumption rather than establish that the information was successfully interpreted or used by the business. Review the actual reading route and outcome with the maintainer, especially when more than one part of a feature needs the response.

    Also called: Response.bodyUsed

  • AI & new tech

    Response header

A response header carries metadata in an HTTP response, such as the content format or relevant caching instructions. It is separate from the response body and status code. Review the actual header’s meaning and the service context rather than assume one returned header establishes every security or business requirement.

  • Design & content

    Responsive design

Responsive design is a way of building a website so its layout adapts to different screen sizes while keeping the same content and address.

Also called: responsive website, mobile-friendly design

  • Design & content

    Responsive image sources

Responsive image sources offer image versions that a browser can select for the display conditions. HTML srcset and sizes describe candidates and layout hints, while picture can offer different compositions or formats. A Jersey business should review the selected file, visible subject and delivered size on representative layouts rather than assume supplying several images proves a successful result.

    Also called: srcset, sizes

  • AI & new tech

    REST API

A REST API applies an architectural approach to interactions with resources, commonly using web requests. It is one style of software interface, not a guarantee that two products integrate automatically. Check supported operations, permissions and data formats for the actual services being connected.

    Also called: RESTful API

  • Marketing & social

    Retargeting

Retargeting shows advertising to people who have previously interacted with a business, where the platform and privacy rules allow it. It might remind a visitor about an unfinished purchase. Review consent, audience settings and sensible limits so a Jersey customer is not followed by irrelevant adverts indefinitely.

    Also called: remarketing

  • AI & new tech

    Retrieval-augmented generation

Retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, combines retrieving relevant information with generating an answer. A language model receives selected reference content as context for the current question. For a Jersey business, the important checks are which sources it can use, whether those sources are current and permitted, and whether the answer accurately reflects them.

    Also called: RAG

  • AI & new tech

    Retry

A retry attempts an operation again after a failure or delay. Retrying is useful only when the error and operation make it appropriate. Software should avoid overwhelming a struggling service and should prevent a repeated request from creating duplicate payments, orders or other commitments.

    Also called: request retry

  • Domains & email

    Reverse DNS

Reverse DNS looks up a domain name associated with an IP address, commonly using a PTR record. It is different from resolving a name to an address. Configuration can belong to the address provider, so identify the responsible service before expecting the ordinary website DNS panel to control the lookup.

    Also called: rDNS

  • Design & content

    Reverse geocoding

Reverse geocoding looks up human-readable address information from a geographic location through a supported service. It is the opposite direction to address-to-location geocoding. Review the actual returned record and its relationship to the intended place; a lookup result does not independently prove a particular premises entrance or replace approved customer instructions.

    Also called: Coordinate-to-address lookup

  • Websites & hosting

    Reverse proxy

A reverse proxy receives requests on behalf of backend servers and handles their onward routing or response. It can form part of hosting, delivery or traffic management. A Jersey business should know where it sits, who manages it and how its settings affect the website’s content, access and important customer actions.

  • Design & content

    Revoke object URL

URL.revokeObjectURL() releases a previously created object URL. Call it at the appropriate point when the resource is no longer needed. Review remaining customer interactions before cleanup, so a preview or generated resource stays available for the approved task and its lifecycle is clear to the maintainer.

    Also called: URL.revokeObjectURL()

  • Design & content

    RFC 3339

RFC 3339 defines an Internet timestamp format using a profile of ISO 8601. Its date-time representation includes a date, time and UTC or numeric-offset information. Follow the receiving specification rather than label every ISO-like string RFC 3339; a represented offset is separate from a named zone’s future rules.

    Also called: RFC3339 timestamp

  • SEO

    Rich results

Rich results are enhanced search appearances that can include information beyond an ordinary text listing. Eligibility depends on the particular feature, content and search provider’s requirements. Accurate structured data can support eligible features, but valid markup does not guarantee that the result will be displayed.

    Also called: rich result

  • SEO

    Robots meta tag

A robots meta tag supplies supported crawler directives in an HTML page, such as indexing or preview instructions. The crawler must be able to fetch the page to read it. Review the exact directive and intended public outcome; it is distinct from robots.txt crawling rules.

    Also called: meta robots

  • SEO

    Robots.txt

Robots.txt is a public file that gives cooperating crawlers instructions about which website paths they may request.

  • Analytics

    ROI

ROI means return on investment. It compares a return with the cost of an investment, using a clearly stated calculation. It differs from a report of advertising revenue alone. Include relevant costs and a sensible time period when judging whether a website or marketing activity has paid off.

    Also called: return on investment

  • Security & legal

    Role-based access control

Role-based access control assigns permissions through defined roles, such as editor or administrator. A role name alone does not prove its scope. Check what each role can actually view, change and export, then choose suitable roles for the people maintaining a Jersey website.

    Also called: RBAC

  • Websites & hosting

    Rollback

A rollback returns a system to an earlier working version or state. It can help recover from a faulty release, but it may not reverse every data change safely. Agree what can be restored and how recent orders, bookings or records will be preserved.

    Also called: release rollback

  • Websites & hosting

    Round trip time

Round trip time, or RTT, measures the time for a signal or request to travel to a destination and for its response to return. It describes a particular measured path, not every part of loading or using a website. Review the measurement conditions alongside the actual customer task.

    Also called: RTT

  • Websites & hosting

    Router

A router forwards data packets between networks using information about their destinations and available routes. A business’s local router is one part of a wider connection path. Record its support responsibility and check whether a problem affects one network or the website across different connections.

  • Domains & email

    RRSIG record

An RRSIG record carries a digital signature covering a DNS resource record set. It participates in DNSSEC validation and includes signature timing information. It is not a website TLS certificate. The DNS maintainer should manage signing and investigate relevant validation errors rather than ask staff to copy signatures manually.

Also called: DNS resource record signature

  • Design & content

    RSS

RSS is a format for publishing a feed of updates that readers or other software can subscribe to. It can help people follow articles without revisiting the site manually. A feed needs accurate titles, working destinations and a clear relationship to the content it represents.

Also called: Really Simple Syndication, web feed

  • AI & new tech

    Runtime

A runtime is the environment that executes code, such as a browser’s JavaScript engine or Node.js outside the browser. A build-time tool and the live website may use different environments. Record the supported versions and actual deployment arrangement so maintenance is based on the project’s requirements.

    Also called: execution environment
